De Havilland Canada DHC-8-200 Dash 8, serial number 002, operated as C-GGMP. This historically important aircraft began life as the second Dash 8 prototype and was retained by the manufacturer for development and test work rather than entering normal airline service. It was subsequently modified to DHC-8-200 configuration, incorporating the more powerful engines and improved performance associated with the later variant. C-GGMP continued serving Bombardier as a flight-test and development aircraft for decades and was frequently based at Tucson, Arizona. Remarkably, the veteran airframe was still active in 2026, more than four decades after the original Dash 8 development program began.
Designed as a short-haul transport based on the Dash 7 design, the Bombardier Dash 8 (formerly de Havilland Canada DHC-8) was first flown on June 20th, 1983. Appearing to be a smaller, twin-engined version of the Dash 7, the Dash 8 design placed less emphasis on STOL (Short take-off and landing) capability and focused more heavily on economical operation. The two Pratt & Whitney PW100 engines mated to a very high aspect ratio wing enabled the Dash 8 to offer the lowest cost per passenger mile of any regional airliner of it's era. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
