Airbus A320-214, serial number 876, operated by Air China as B-2376. Delivered new to CNAC-Zhejiang Airlines on October 5, 1998, the aircraft subsequently became part of Air China's fleet following the merger of Zhejiang Airlines into Air China in 2003. B-2376 was particularly distinctive in the airline's "Purple Peony" special color scheme and operated domestic Chinese and regional international services for many years. After leaving Air China, it was transferred to Spanish operator Gowair and registered EC-MXJ in June 2018. Its long Chinese career made B-2376 one of the earlier A320s associated with both Zhejiang Airlines and Air China's expanding Airbus narrowbody fleet. Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
