The Sukhoi Su-17M4 (Fitter-K) was a key Soviet strike aircraft during the final year of the Afghan War in 1988. Operating from bases like Bagram Air Base, it conducted close air support and interdiction missions against Mujahideen forces. Equipped with advanced navigation and attack systems, it carried bombs, rockets, and cluster munitions. Increasing threats from FIM-92 Stinger missiles forced higher-altitude tactics and heavy flare use. Its rugged design, high speed, and payload made it effective in Afghanistan's harsh mountainous combat environment during Soviet withdrawal operations.
Designed as a swing-wing fighter-bomber, the Su-17 first flew on August 2nd, 1966. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
