Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 61 (WTD 61) is the Luftwaffe's premier test and evaluation unit, based in Manching, Germany. The unit specializes in assessing new aircraft, systems, and technologies to ensure their readiness for operational use. WTD 61 works with a variety of platforms, including Tornados, Eurofighters, and former East German aircraft like the Su-22. The Su-22s were flown extensively from 1991 until 1998 to study their flight characteristics and weapons capabilities. To mark their retirement, aircraft #98+14 received a black/red/gold "last flight" logo on the left side of the fuselage in addition to the tiger scheme that had previously been applied to the rudder. Designed as a swing-wing fighter-bomber, the Su-17 first flew on August 2nd, 1966. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
