In 2022, the 493rd Fighter Squadron "Grim Reapers" celebrated its anniversary at RAF Lakenheath, marking decades of excellence in aerial combat and defense. Known for flying the F-15C Eagle and transitioning to the advanced F-35A Lightning II, the squadron honored its legacy of NATO support and global operations. The celebration included ceremonies recognizing past achievements and honoring squadron members, past and present. As part of the 48th Fighter Wing, the 493rd FS continues to play a critical role in U.S. Air Force operations in Europe, reinforcing its motto: "We kill SPECTREs," a nod to their spectral and deadly precision. Designed to meet US Air Force requirements for an air superiority fighter to replace the F-4 Phantom, the F-15 Eagle first flew on July 27, 1972. Following reviews of proposals, the United States Air Force selected McDonnell Douglas's design in 1969 to meet the service's need for a dedicated air superiority fighter. They are highly detailed with a delicate thin cambered wing, simulated stainless-steel heat shielding surrounding the engine exhausts, movable razor thin all metal elevators and rudders. The underside of the aircraft features metal landing gear with a full complement of beautifully pad printed ordnance.
