In June 1944, JG 51 was tasked with protecting Romanian oil fields from 15th Air Force bombing raids. During this period the unit took its toll on US bombers with minimal losses. Elias Kuhlein, flying his Bf 109G, shot down two B-24 Liberators. By Christmas of 1944, Kuhlein had been promoted to Staffelkapitan of 6./JG 51 with a total score of 21 aerial victories. By war's end, Kuhlein was credited with 36 confirmed victories in 600 missions.
Designed to meet a Luftwaffe need for a single-seat fighter/interceptor, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was first flown on May 28th, 1935. Its all-metal construction, closed canopy and retractable gear made the Bf 109 one of the first true modern fighters of WWII. This versatile aircraft served in many roles and was the most produced aircraft of the war and the backbone of the Luftwaffe, and was flown by Germany's top three aces, who claimed a total of 928 victories between them. Armed with two cannons and two machine guns, the Bf 109's design underwent constant revisions, which allowed it to remain competitive until the end of the war. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
JC's 1:72 scale Bf 109 is a high-quality reproduction at an affordable price. Some of the details on this beautiful model are so fine they could be overlooked, such as tiny pad printed placards that are only visible upon close inspection (a feature rarely seen in models of this scale). The wing is solid diecast metal, with trim-tab detail and a metal pitot tube. Each release has a display stand bearing details such as the aircraft's name, operator or type. Some releases have the early bird-cage style canopy while later variants feature an upgraded canopy, and some also feature center-mounted drop tanks and wing-mounted cannons.
