Airbus A320, operated by Tigerair Taiwan as B-50015. Tigerair Taiwan used the aircraft as part of its scheduled passenger or freight network. The registration B-50015 identifies the individual airframe within the fleet. The type was selected for its balance of capacity, range, and operating economics and was used where those characteristics best matched the carrier's route structure. Its service forms part of the airline's continuing fleet evolution as older aircraft were replaced or supplemented by newer designs with improved fuel efficiency, avionics, reliability, and passenger amenities.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
