Boeing 777-2H6ER, serial number 28411, operated by Malaysia Airlines as 9M-MRD. Delivered in 1997, the Rolls-Royce Trent 892-powered aircraft joined the carrier during a major period of long-haul expansion and served international routes from Kuala Lumpur for many years. Malaysia Airlines used the 777-200ER throughout Asia and on longer services to Europe and other international destinations before progressively reducing the fleet. 9M-MRD was eventually withdrawn and stored as the airline moved away from the 777. Its career represents Malaysia Airlines' extensive use of the original-generation 777-200ER before newer Airbus A330 and A350 aircraft assumed a greater share of long-haul flying. Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection. Standard varients have a range of 4,200 nautical miles while Extended Range (ER) variants can fly for 6,600 nautical miles and the Longer Range (LR) variant is the world's longest range airliner capable of flying 7,800 nautical miles. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
