Boeing 767-300ER, operated by KLM Royal Dutch Airlines as PH-BZK. The aircraft belongs to a generation that played a major role in the expansion of its operator's network before newer, more fuel-efficient types arrived. KLM used the aircraft from Amsterdam Schiphol, where it supported the airline's dense European feeder network or long-haul system depending on the aircraft type. The aircraft's service reflects the transition from late twentieth-century jetliners to today's quieter and more economical fleets. Examples of this type frequently changed operators later in life, and many widebody and narrowbody airframes subsequently found second careers with charter, cargo, or overseas airlines.
Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to fill the niche between the narrow-bodied 707 and wide-bodied 747, the 767 was first flown on September 26th, 1981. Developed in tandem with the narrow-bodied 757 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 767 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
