Boeing 777-300ER, construction number 32430, registered N5017V during Boeing flight testing. The aircraft was the first 777-300ER flight-test airframe and played a central role in development and certification of the extended-range variant. Powered by two General Electric GE90-115B engines, it helped prove the performance of what became the dominant long-range 777 model. Following the test program, Boeing refurbished the aircraft and delivered it to Japan Airlines on July 1, 2004 as JA732J. It entered JAL service that month and remained in operation for about 21 years before retirement, making its career unusually significant both as a prototype and revenue airliner. Designed as a wide-bodied, twin-engined airliner to compete with the Airbus A330/A340 and the McDonnell Douglas MD-11, the 777 was first flown on June 12th, 1994. A pair of the world's largest diameter turbofan engines power the aircraft which currently holds the record for world's largest twin-engined airliner. The 777 was Boeing's first fly-by-wire airliner, featuring complete glass cockpit displays and flight envelope protection. Standard varients have a range of 4,200 nautical miles while Extended Range (ER) variants can fly for 6,600 nautical miles and the Longer Range (LR) variant is the world's longest range airliner capable of flying 7,800 nautical miles. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
