Airbus A330-223, serial number 300, operated by Malaysia Airlines as 9M-MKW. Built in 1999, the aircraft was one of several secondhand A330-200s acquired by Malaysia Airlines in 2003 to supplement its larger A330-300 fleet. Powered by Pratt & Whitney PW4168A engines, 9M-MKW was used on regional and medium-haul international services from Kuala Lumpur, with photographs documenting operations to destinations including Guangzhou and Istanbul. It remained with Malaysia Airlines until 2012. The aircraft was part of a small group of A330-200s that gave Malaysia Airlines additional long-range flexibility while maintaining commonality with its established A330 fleet.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers. The A330 has the same range and payload capacity as a DC-10 with 25% greater fuel efficiency. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
