Boeing 747SP, serial number 21025, first flew on 3 November 1975 as Boeing's fifth 747SP (N41035). After completing its demonstration and test program, it was sold to Pan Am in March, 1976 as N533PA "Clipper Liberty Bell". It famously completed a round-the-world flight on 1 May 1976, carrying 98 passengers over 23,137 miles, setting multiple speed records. Part of Pan Am's SP fleet, it also bore Clipper Freedom, New Horizons, and Young America names and commemorated Pan Am's 50th anniversary with special markings. Sold to United Airlines in 1986 as N143UA, it was retired in 1995 and scrapped in 1997, after nearly 79,000 flight hours. Its legacy remains iconic in aviation history.

Boeing 747SP

Known during development as the 747SB (short-body), the 747SP (special performance) was designed to meet a 1973 joint request from Pan American World Airways and Iran Air for a long-range, high-capacity airliner. The SP variant had a fuselage that was shortended by 47 feet while retaining the engines and fuel tank capacity, yeilding a higher speed and longer range than existing 747 variants. The 747SP first entered service with Pan Am in 1976 and in the years that followed, its record-setting range enabled Pan Am to offer the longest non-stop flights in the world, including New York - Tokyo, San Francisco - Hong Kong and Los Angeles - Sydney.
