The Kawanishi H8K (Type 2 Large Flying Boat.Nishiki Daitei, Nishiki Taitei) was an Imperial Japanese Navy flying boat used during World War II for maritime patrol duties. The Allied reporting name for the type was Emily. The H8K entered production in 1941 and first saw operational use on the night of March 4, 1942 in an attempt at a second raid on Pearl Harbor. Since the target lay out of range for the flying boats, this audacious plan involved a refuelling by submarine at French Frigate Shoals en route. Two planes attempted to bomb Pearl Harbor but, due to poor visibility, did not accomplish any significant damage. H8K2 were used on a wide range of patrol, reconnaissance, bombing, and transport missions throughout the Pacific war.

Kawanishi H8K Emily

Designed to meet an Imperial Japanese Naval requirement for a larger flying boat than the H6K, the Kawanishi H8K was first flown on December 31st, 1940. In its first operational mission, the H8K set out to bomb Pearl Harbor, putting down in the pacific to refuel from a submarine. A long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft, H8K (codenamed "Emily" by the Allies) with its impressive cannon armament, outstanding speed and ASV radar gave American submarines and ships great reason for concern. The Emily's shoulder-mounted wing assembly housed the four Mitsubishi engines that gave it the endurance to patrol for 24-hour missions.
