The Henschel Hs 129 was a World War II ground attack aircraft fielded by the German Luftwaffe. Its nickname, the Panzerknacker (tank cracker), is a deliberate pun - in German, it also means "safe cracker". The Hs 129 never really had a chance to prove itself in any way; the plane was produced only in small numbers and deployed during a time when the Luftwaffe was unable to protect them from attack. Designed to fill a Luftwaffe need for an effective ground attack aircraft, the Henschel Hs 129 first flew on May 25, 1939. Heavily armored around the cockpit and engines, the Hs 129 overcame the historical problems faced by attack aircraft, which had always been vulnerable to ground forces. Later versions were armed with auto-loading PaK 40 anti-tank guns, capable of taking out any enemy tank. Unfortunately for the Luftwaffe, the extra weight of this system rendered an already encumbered aircraft "barely flyable," and their small numbers (only 25 of this variant) meant they had no impact on the outcome of the war. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
