Airbus A330-243MRTT Voyager KC.Mk 2, operated by the Royal Air Force as ZZ336. Based on the commercial A330-200, the Voyager combines strategic passenger and cargo transport with aerial refueling capability. Powered by two Rolls-Royce Trent 772B engines, ZZ336 can carry personnel and freight over intercontinental distances while refueling compatible aircraft through underwing hose-and-drogue pods. The Voyager fleet replaced the RAF's aging VC10 and TriStar tanker-transports and has supported combat deployments, exercises, humanitarian operations, and long-range movements worldwide. The A330 platform provides the RAF with substantially improved efficiency, reliability, range, and flexibility for modern expeditionary operations.
Designed as a wide-bodied, long-haul passenger transport to compete with the Boeing 767, the A330 was first flown on November 2nd, 1992. It was designed as a lengthened version of the A300 and was developed in parallel with the larger, four-engined A340, enabling many of the components to be shared between the three types. The A330 also uses the same fly-by-wire technology that was introduced with the A320, featuring a glass cockpit and side-stick controllers.
