Douglas DC-3, operated by Aer Lingus as EI-AFA. The aircraft served during an important era in commercial aviation, when airlines were rapidly expanding jet service and replacing older piston and turboprop equipment. Aer Lingus used aircraft such as EI-AFA on scheduled passenger routes where the type's speed, capacity, and range matched contemporary traffic requirements. These classic airliners became familiar sights at major airports and helped establish the modern airline networks that followed. Although later designs offered quieter engines, lower fuel consumption, and more advanced avionics, the type earned a lasting reputation for dependable service and remains an important part of airline history.
Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for an enlarged version of the DC-2, the DC-3 was first flown on December 17th, 1935. Capable of carrying 24 passengers at a cruising speed of 180 mph, the DC-3's speed and long range revolutionized commercial air travel in the 1930s and 40s, when it carried 90 percent of the world's air travelers.
