The DC-10 Air Tanker is an American wide-body jet air tanker, which has been in service as an aerial firefighting unit since 2006. The aircraft, operated by the joint technical venture 10 Tanker Air Carrier, is a converted McDonnell Douglas DC-10 airliner, and is primaily used to fight wildfires, typically in rural areas. The turbofan-powered aircraft carries up to 12,000 US gallons (45,000 liters) of water or fire retardant in an exterior belly-mounted tank, the contents of which can be released in eight seconds. Two air tankers are currently in operation, with the call-signs Tanker 910 and Tanker 911.
Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for a wide-bodied transport, the DC-10 was first flown on August 29th, 1970. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Inflight's 1:200 scale DC-10 is a large model in this scale and constructed almost entirely of diecast metal. The wide body fuselage features an all around seamless construction with pad-printed window and doors with delicate antennas found on the top and bottom. Each engine is constructed in diecast metal and plastic with compressor fan blades that spin freely if air is blown through the intake. The model rests on fixed metal landing gear with rotating wheels for ground display.
