McDonnell Douglas DC-9-31, operated by Eastern Air Lines as N8980E. The aircraft joined Eastern's large DC-9 fleet for short and medium haul passenger services throughout the United States, particularly along the airline's extensive East Coast network. The stretched DC-9-30 offered significantly greater passenger capacity than the original DC-9-10 while retaining excellent runway performance and economical operation. Powered by two rear-mounted Pratt & Whitney JT8D turbofan engines, N8980E became part of the dependable workhorse fleet that connected Eastern's major hubs with numerous smaller communities during the airline's rapid expansion in the 1960s and 1970s.

McDonnell Douglas DC-9-31

Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals. The DC-9 spawned many variants leading to the MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717. In total, almost 2,500 aircraft were built over a period of more than 40 years.
