Douglas DC-9-15, serial number 45787, line number 127, operated by Hughes Airwest as N9348. Built in 1967, the aircraft was originally delivered to Swissair as HB-IFE and subsequently served Germanair, Kenya Airways and Korean Air before Hughes Airwest acquired it in December 1972. Initially registered N1793U, it became N9348 and received Hughes Airwest's distinctive "Sundance Yellow" colors in January 1973. It later passed through Republic Airlines and Northwest Airlines before becoming part of Delta's fleet through merger. This unusually well-traveled DC-9 survived for decades after beginning its career in Europe.

McDonnell Douglas DC-9-15

Designed as a short-range twin-jet transport, the DC-9 was first flown on February 25th, 1965. Since shorter routes frequently required operation from small airports, the design focused on short-field performance. The most significant decision was to move the engines from under the wings to the tail, enabling the use of full-span flaps, reducing the possibility of foreign-object ingestion and lowering ground clearance for easier servicing at small terminals. The DC-9 spawned many variants leading to the MD-80, MD-90 and Boeing 717. In total, almost 2,500 aircraft were built over a period of more than 40 years.
