Boeing 757-225, serial number 22611, entered service with Eastern Air Lines as N522EA before later joining Samaritan's Purse as N783SP. Built in 1985, the aircraft subsequently served several passenger operators before being converted to a freighter in 2007. Acquired by Samaritan's Purse, N783SP was configured to transport humanitarian supplies and disaster-relief cargo to locations around the world. Powered by two Rolls-Royce RB211 engines, the 757 combines substantial cargo capacity with excellent range and runway performance. The aircraft has served as an important component of the organization's international disaster-response and humanitarian aviation operations.
Designed as a narrow-bodied, twin-engined airliner to replace the 727, the 757 was first flown on February 19th, 1982. Developed in tandem with the wide-bodied 767 twinjet, both aircraft share a common digital cockpit layout and are operated by a two man flight crew. Thanks to a proven reliability track-record, the 757 is approved for extended twin engine operations (ETOPS) making it a popular choice for airlines flying transatlantic routes.
