Boeing 737-524, serial number 27900, entered service with Continental Airlines as N16632. The aircraft joined the airline's narrowbody fleet in the mid 1990s and operated short and medium haul routes throughout the United States and to nearby international destinations. Configured with first class and economy seating, the 737-500 provided efficient service on routes requiring smaller capacity aircraft. Powered by CFM56-3 engines, the aircraft offered reliable performance and good fuel efficiency for regional operations. N16632 supported Continental's hub networks at Houston, Newark, and Cleveland before the airline retired the 737-500 fleet as newer and more efficient aircraft entered service. Designed as a smaller, short-ranged alternative to the Boeing 707 and 727, the 737 was first flown on April 9th, 1967. Over its long operational carreer, the 737 has spawned numerous variants ranging in capacity from less than 100 to more than 200 seats. In fact, the 737 series is the best-selling jetliner in aviation history with more than 6,500 aircraft manufactured to date and more than 4,500 still in service with over 500 airlines around the world.
