Airbus A320, operated by Ansett Australia as VH-HYG. The aircraft served short and medium-haul passenger routes and provided a practical balance of capacity, range, and operating performance. Ansett Australia used aircraft such as VH-HYG to connect major cities with regional destinations while supporting frequent scheduled services. The type became part of the continuing evolution of narrowbody airline operations, offering the reliability and flexibility required for intensive daily use. Over time, newer aircraft introduced improved engines, avionics, fuel efficiency, and passenger amenities, but examples such as VH-HYG remain representative of the equipment that helped build and sustain the carrier's route network.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
