Airbus A320-211, serial number 326, operated by Northwest Airlines as N327NW. Delivered new to Northwest in 1992, the aircraft was part of the carrier's early adoption of the Airbus A320 family. Northwest used its A320s extensively from hubs including Minneapolis-St. Paul, Detroit, and Memphis, gradually making Airbus narrowbodies a major part of its domestic fleet. Following the Northwest-Delta merger, N327NW transferred to Delta Air Lines and continued operating in essentially the same role. Its career illustrates the longevity of Northwest's early A320 fleet, many examples of which remained productive for decades after their original delivery.
Designed as a short/medium range narrow-body airliner to compete with the Boeing 737, the Airbus A320 was first flown on February 22nd, 1987. The A320 features side stick controllers and glass cockpit and was the world's first airliner to use use a digital fly-by-wire control system. Controversially, the software includes "flight envelope protection" to prevent the pilot from exceeding safe flight parameters. The highly successful design rapidly led to the development of the shortened-fuselage A318 and A319, and lengthened-fuselage A321 derivatives.
