Lockheed L-188A Electra, serial number 188-1033, operated by Eastern Air Lines as N5522. Eastern placed the aircraft in service in February 1959, making it part of the airline's important early turboprop fleet. N5522 later became a familiar aircraft on Eastern's high-frequency Northeast Corridor services, including the famous Air-Shuttle between New York, Washington, and Boston. Eastern sold the aircraft to Zantop International Airlines in December 1977, beginning a second career in cargo operations. It later passed to TMC Airlines and was eventually acquired for spare parts, being broken up in January 2008 after a career approaching half a century.

Lockheed L-188 Electra

Designed and built by Lockheed for American Airlines, the L-188 Electra first flew on December 6, 1957. The L-188 was the first turboprop airliner produced in the United States, with standard seating for 66 to 88 passengers. Powered by four Allison 501D-13 turboprops, the aircraft performed nearly as well as contemporary turbojets but cost less to operate. Unfortunately, two fatal accidents quickly eroded faith in the type and led to early cancelation of production. Electras were most infamously flown by the Argentine Navy, who used them to dispose of political prisoners over the Rio de La Plata.
