The KC-135T Stratotanker #59-1471 of the 116th Air Refueling Squadron, Washington Air National Guard, received a special heritage scheme in 2024 to celebrate the unit's 100th anniversary. Based at Fairchild Air Force Base with the 141st Air Refueling Wing, the aircraft features a distinctive tail design inspired by markings carried by the squadron's early aircraft in the 1930s when it served as the 116th Observation Squadron. Prominently displayed is the historic unit emblem, an ace of spades pierced by a dagger, first adopted in 1931. The commemorative livery honors a century of service supporting U.S. air operations and global aerial refueling missions. Designed as an in-flight refueling tanker for the United States Air Force, the KC-135 was first flown in August 1956. It has played a crucial role in extending the range and endurance of U.S. and allied aircraft. Its primary mission is to refuel other aircraft in-flight, enabling them to operate over longer distances without the need to land for refueling. The aircraft is based on the Boeing 707 and has a distinctive appearance with its swept wings and a flying boom for refueling operations. Beyond aerial refueling, the KC-135 can also transport cargo, perform medical evacuations, and support strategic airlift missions. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
