McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10, construction number 47806, was delivered new to Western Airlines as N912WA in the early 1970s and later transferred to American Airlines following American's acquisition of Western in 1987. The aircraft entered American service operating high capacity domestic routes across the United States, including transcontinental services from hubs such as Dallas Fort Worth and Los Angeles. N912WA retained a two class cabin and was repainted into American Airlines' polished metal livery. The DC-10 provided strong payload capability and range, supporting American's widebody operations before the airline standardized on twin engine aircraft. N912WA was eventually retired as American phased out the DC-10 fleet in favor of more fuel efficient types such as the 767 and 777.
Designed to meet an American Airlines requirement for a wide-bodied transport, the DC-10 was first flown on August 29th, 1970. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
