Lockheed P-3 Orion, serial or aircraft number 5-257, operated by IRIAF. The aircraft served in a military transport, surveillance, tanker, or support role and reflects the adaptation of proven aviation technology to demanding service requirements. Its combination of range, reliability, and mission flexibility allowed it to support training, deployments, and operational commitments over many years. Aircraft 5-257 was valued for dependable performance and the ability to operate within a wider force of specialized aircraft. The type's long service life demonstrates the durability of its basic design and the continuing value of upgrades to avionics, engines, communications, and mission equipment. Designed as a replacement for the P2V Neptune Anti-Submarine aircraft, the P-3 Orion was first flown in November, 1959. The aircraft is based on the Electra turboprop airliner, with the addition of a distinctive tail boom "stinger" that houses sensitive Magnetic Anomoly Detector far from airframe interference. An internal bomb bay can be configured to drop torpedoes and even nuclear weapons while anti-ship missiles or bombs can be carried on underwing pylons.
