USS Vincennes (CG-49) was a Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser commissioned on July 6, 1985. Equipped with the advanced Aegis combat system, Vincennes was designed for fleet air defense and could simultaneously detect, track, and engage numerous airborne threats. She deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1988 during Operation Earnest Will. On July 3, while engaged with Iranian gunboats, Vincennes mistakenly shot down Iran Air Flight 655, killing all 290 aboard. The cruiser subsequently returned to Pacific Fleet operations and remained in service until June 29, 2005. She was later scrapped in 2011.
