Holyman's Airways Pty Ltd was formed in 1932. In 1935 Holyman convinced the Australian Government to lift the ban on the importation of U.S. built commercial aircraft. The first Douglas DC-2 aircraft was delivered to Holyman's Airways in January 1936 and entered service on May18, 1936. It was registered as VH-USY c/n 1580 and was named "Bungana" (meaning Big Chief in Tasmanian). Mergers saw Holyman's Airway form Australian National Airways Ltd. (ANA) with VH-USY joining the ANA fleet in November 1936. The aircraft remained in service until December 1947.
Designed to meet a TWA requirement for a passenger aircraft comparable to the Boeing Model 247, the DC-2 was first flown in 1934. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
