N401FE originally was an A310-203 MSN 191 built in 1982 and delivered to Lufthansa on March 9, 1984 as D-AICA. On January 27, 1995 the aircraft was purchased by Federal Express and was registered as N401FE. The aircraft was converted to an A310-203(F) and given the name "David". The aircraft was operational for FedEX until October 2009 when it was placed in storage. It is stored at the former George Air Force Base and the facility prefers to be called Southern California Logistics.
