From 1946 until 1991 the Cold War existed as the Soviet Union took control of most of Eastern Europe with fears they would try to expand further west. As a result western Allies moved more forces and equipment into West Germany as a deterrent. Production of the M60 ended in 1983 but 5,400 of the 15,000 that had been produced were converted to M60A3 standards with many being deployed to West Germany. The M60A3's were phased out of U.S. service in the 1990's but continued to be the MBT of many smaller countries.
