On July 18, 1944 “Operation Goodwood” was launched. The plan was to capture the town of Caen and establish a frontline so airfields could be acquired as well as protecting the left flank of the US 1st Army. Even though the British 11th Armoured Division outnumbered the Germans a delay on the Normandy beaches meant armoured support didn’t reach the area of Caen. This along with poor planning lead and stiff German resistance turned this operation into a huge defeat. By July 20th “Operation Goodwood” was a disaster with a loss of 200 11th Armoured Division tanks so it was cancelled. With its twin Cadillac V-8 engines, the M5 was designed to relieve the demand for the radial aero-engines used in its predecessor, the M3. Initially called M4, the tank was redesignated M5 in an effort to avoid confusion with the M4 Sherman. The M5's 37mm main gun provided inferior firepower but the 50 caliber machine gun became a favorite of gunners. This tank's armament was effective and its mobility was impressive at a top speed of 36 MPH.
