In 1944 and 1945 the 82nd Airborne developed its own standardized armor kit for its recon jeeps. They steel plates on the sides to protect the driver and the front passenger as well as a steel windshield with a slot cut in it so the driver could peek out to see where he was driving if he had to duck below the plates. They also added a sloping plate in front of the grill to protect the radiator and engine. There were many official attempts to add armor to the Jeep but the extra weight overloaded the vehicle.
Designed to meet a US Department of War requirement for a light, cross-country reconnaissance vehicle, the Willys MB Army Jeep was manufactured between 1941 and 1945. The Willys Jeep was the original version of what would later become one of the most iconic vehicles in American history, evolving into a popular civilian vehicle that is still being produced today. The Willys Jeep was a compact, four-wheel drive vehicle that rapidly became one of the most prolific vehicles of WWII. More than 640,000 standardized versions were produced, with 8,690 other versions built over a period of four years. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:72 scale Jeep has lots of scale detail in a small package. The body is constructed in diecast metal and the chassis, drive train and suspension are constructed in plastic, which allows for maximum detail. The interior features a pad-printed instrument panel, separately painted seat cushions, a steering wheel and three transmission gear-shifts. There is a folding windscreen on the exterior, along with a delicate side mirror painted to look like real glass. Separately applied battlefield equipment includes shovels, hatchets, jerry cans and a spare tire. Underneath the model the drive train and leaf-spring suspension are clearly visible.
