The 15th Panzer Division was comprised of many units with one being the 33rd Tank Destroyer Battalion. In the Spring of 1941 the 15th was sent to Libya as one of two divisions of Erwin Rommel's Afrika Corps. The 15th fought in all but one of the North Africa battles. They arrived too late for the first one when Rommel captured Benghazi. The 15th did take part in recapturing Benghazi. The division finally was defeated and destroyed in May 1943 when the only fuel available for their engines was Tunisian wine.
Designed to meet a German need for an anti-tank weapon that was more powerful and more mobile than towed anti-tank guns like the Pak 36, the Marder III served from 1942 to 1945. This makeshift tank destroyer was based on obsolete German tanks and captured French vehicles, and was built on a Panzer 38(t) chassis. Armed with captured Soviet 76.2mm guns, early Marder IIIs had open tops and only weak armor on the front and sides. Later models employed 7.5cm PaK 40 anti-tank guns and provided marginally better protection for the crew, but by 1944 the Marder III was phased out of production in favor of fully armored vehicles. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
Hobby Master's 1:72 scale Marder III is constructed with an intelligent mix of diecast metal and plastic components, with the lower portion of the hull made from diecast metal and the upper portion in plastic. Fine details can be seen on the cannon breach system, operator seats and scale rivets on the top of the armor plating. The rotating turret has a pivoting metal cannon and can slide back and forward on its cradle. The open top turret design allows for easy viewing of the gun sight, dial controls and ammo storage details. Battlefield equipment includes side mounted hatchets, lever bar and jack and separately applied spare track.
