With the outbreak of the Korean War and the over running of some forward bases air base defense became an urgent matter. Between July 1950 and December 1951 Air Force Police numbers jumped from 10,000 to 39,000 members. At one point the Air Police Units were the only armed personnel on a base and they were lightly armed. This all changed with the Korean War, just about everyone was armed and the Air Force Police Units received more radio jeeps, armored vehicles, machine guns and recoilless rifles.
Designed to meet a US Department of War requirement for a light, cross-country reconnaissance vehicle, the Willys MB Army Jeep was manufactured between 1941 and 1945. The Willys Jeep was the original version of what would later become one of the most iconic vehicles in American history, evolving into a popular civilian vehicle that is still being produced today. The Willys Jeep was a compact, four-wheel drive vehicle that rapidly became one of the most prolific vehicles of WWII. Hobby Master's 1:48 scale Jeep packs a lot of scale detail into a small package. The chassis and drive train is constructed almost entirely in diecast metal providing a nice weighted feel to the model. The interior features a pad-printed instrument panel, separately painted seat cushions and scale steering wheel and transmission gear-shifts levers. Each release highlights a variety of cabin equipment configurations such as a center mounted machine gun, open or closed ragtop and rear mounted radio equipment (See Photos). Separately applied battlefield equipment includes shovels, hatchets, jerry cans and a spare tire. Underneath the model the drive train and leaf-spring suspension are clearly visible.
