French Aeronavale Flottille 14F operated the Vought F-8E(FN) Crusader from March 1965 until April 1979, initially from Lann-Bihoue and later Landivisiau. The squadron provided all weather fleet air defense and interception for the aircraft carriers Clemenceau and Foch. The French Crusader was specially modified for operation from France's smaller carriers and carried air to air missiles alongside four 20 mm cannon. 14F participated in several overseas deployments, including Operation Saphir around Djibouti. In May 1977, two 14F Crusaders encountered Yemeni MiG-21s but no weapons were fired. The squadron converted to the Super Etendard in 1979. Designed to meet a USN requirement for a supersonic air-superiority fighter, the Chance-Vought F-8 (originally F8U) was first flown on March 25th, 1955. The F-8 was the last American fighter to use guns as a primary weapon. Its powerplant was nearly identical to the one used by the F-100 Super Sabre, and it was the world's first carrier-based aircraft to break the speed of sound. The US Navy used the Crusader in a traditional dogfighting interceptor role, while the Marines operated it as a strike/attack aircraft.
