In 2024, the French Aeronavale celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Rafale Marine's entry into operational service. Flottille 12F at BAN Landivisiau holds a special place in this history as the first French Navy unit equipped with the Rafale M. The squadron transitioned from the legendary F-8E(FN) Crusader and became operational with the Rafale on June 25, 2004. Twenty years later, 12F continued operating the carrier capable fighter from Charles de Gaulle. The Rafale M provides fleet defense, air superiority, precision strike, reconnaissance, anti ship attack, and nuclear deterrence capabilities. Designed as a result of the ACX (Avion de Combat Experimentale) program prior to France's withdrawl from the EFA project, the Rafale was first flown on July 4th, 1986. The Rafale is multi-role fighter for the Franch Air Force and Navy, capable of handling missions from reconnaissance to air supremacy to nuclear deterrence. The Rafale built on Dassault's expertise with delta-winged fighter design, adding a forward canard to improve maneuverability and reduce approach speeds for carrier operations. The Rafale's advanced avionics and and limited stealth capabilities are expected to secure it as the primary combat aircraft for the French Air Force and Navy until at least 2040. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
