French Aeronavale Flottille 12F operates the Dassault Rafale M from BAN Landivisiau and aboard the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle. The squadron was reactivated on May 18, 2001, becoming the French Navy's first operational Rafale unit after previously flying the F-8 Crusader. The carrier capable Rafale M performs air superiority, fleet defense, reconnaissance, precision strike, and nuclear deterrence missions. Its advanced sensors, electronic warfare systems, and extensive weapons capability make it a highly versatile naval fighter. Flottille 12F has deployed its Rafales on numerous overseas operations and multinational exercises, maintaining France's carrier based combat aviation capability.
The ASMP-A is a French nuclear air-launched cruise missile. In French nuclear doctrine, it is referred to as a "pre-strategic" weapon, the last-resort "warning shot" prior to a full-scale employment of strategic nuclear weapons launched from the Triomphant-class ballistic missile submarines.
Designed as a result of the ACX (Avion de Combat Experimentale) program prior to France's withdrawl from the EFA project, the Rafale was first flown on July 4th, 1986. The Rafale is multi-role fighter for the Franch Air Force and Navy, capable of handling missions from reconnaissance to air supremacy to nuclear deterrence. The Rafale built on Dassault's expertise with delta-winged fighter design, adding a forward canard to improve maneuverability and reduce approach speeds for carrier operations.
