John Glenn served with Marine Fighting Squadron 155 (VMF-155) during World War II. Flying the F4F Wildcat and later the F4U Corsair, Glenn operated in the Pacific Theater, including missions from Midway and the Marshall Islands. VMF-155 was among the first Marine squadrons to conduct fighter operations from land bases in the Central Pacific. Glenn flew combat missions providing air cover and support for ground forces. His experience with VMF-155 marked the beginning of a distinguished aviation career that later included flying jets in Korea and becoming the first American to orbit Earth as a NASA astronaut in 1962. Designed to meet a US Navy requirement for a single-seat carrier based fighter, the F4U was first flown on May 29th, 1940. This versatile aircraft saw service with both the Navy and Marine Corps in WW II and in the Korean War. During its lifetime, the Corsair underwent numerous improvements such as a lengthened fuselage, a high visibility bubble-top canopy and folding inverted gull wings that provided clearance for a large propeller. Its performance advantage, 400 mph capability, the ability to withstand punishment and six .50 Browning machine guns made the F4U a devastating weapon against aircraft, ground targets and ships. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
