The Su-57 is Russia's fifth-generation multirole stealth fighter, developed by Sukhoi. It first flew in 2010 and was introduced to the Russian Air Force in 2020, with a focus on air superiority and strike roles. The Su-57 combines stealth, advanced avionics, and supermaneuverability, and it's designed to compete with other fifth-generation fighters like the U.S. F-22 and F-35.
The R-77 is a medium-range air-to-air missile, comparable to the American AIM-120 AMRAAM. It features active radar homing and is capable of engaging multiple targets in all-weather conditions. The R-37 is a long-range air-to-air missile designed to destroy high-value aerial targets such as AWACS and tanker aircraft. Its range is one of the longest among air-to-air missiles, reportedly capable of hitting targets up to 400 km away.
By 2019, the Su-57 was still undergoing testing and evaluation, but it was already clear that it would likely carry these advanced missiles to engage enemy aircraft at both medium and long ranges. Its stealth characteristics, combined with the advanced R-77 and R-37 missiles, give the Su-57 a significant edge in beyond-visual-range (BVR) combat.
Designed as a fifth generation stealth fighter, comparable to the F-22, the Su-57 was first flown as the PAK FA on January 29th, 2010. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
