Su-34 Fullback Red 22 RF-95005 was part of a contract to build 32 aircraft. Red 22 was produced in 2012 as one of the 5 Su-34 completed that year and the 28th Su-34 in the contract. The aircraft was originally assigned to the 47th Composite Guards Aviation Regiment at Baltimor (Voronezh). In September 2015 6 Su-34 aircraft arrived in Syria and began aerial attacks on the 30th. In November 2015 8 more Su-34s were scheduled to arrive in Syria in 2 batches. 5 of the first Su-34s to arrive were Red 11, 12, 20, 21 and 22. Interestingly, several of the aircraft deployed with their Russian Air Force Markings and Red Star Insignia painted over. This was possibly done to help mask the identity of any aircraft that might be downed during the ongoing conflict. This particular model shows darkened areas on wing and tail surfaces where the the insignia would ordinarily be seen, simulating the concealed markings of the actual aircraft. Designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the superiority of fourth generation US fighters such as the F-15 Eagle, the Su-27 was first flown on May 20, 1977. This one seat Mach-2 fighter had the Soviet Union's first operational fly-by-wire system. The aircraft is very large compared to the MiG-29, its closest Soviet counterpart, but it is built with a high percentage of titanium, which helps minimize its weight. It is exceptionally agile and is perhaps most famous for its "Cobra" maneuver, which is a short, sustained level flight at a 120 degree angle of attack, often performed at air shows. © Copyright 2003-2024 The Flying Mule, Inc.
