In May 2014, Chinese PLAAF fighters conducted close intercepts of Japan Air Self-Defense Force aircraft over the East China Sea. On 24 May 2014, Japanese officials reported that a PLAAF Su-27 flew within approximately 30 meters of a JASDF OP-3C surveillance aircraft and about 50 meters of a YS-11 electronic intelligence aircraft. Tokyo protested the encounters, calling them unusually close and potentially dangerous. Beijing responded that the Japanese aircraft were conducting close range reconnaissance near Chinese airspace and that the interceptions were lawful and professional.
This aircraft also includes markings that identify it as a Golden Helmet Award winner. The PLAAF Golden Helmet Award, established in 2011, honors top fighter pilots in elite air combat competitions. Pilots compete in realistic within visual range and beyond visual range scenarios using frontline aircraft such as the J-10 and J-16. Winners receive a gold colored helmet symbolizing elite status and combat excellence.
Includes 1:8 scale Golden Helmet to display alongside the model.
Designed by the Soviet Union to challenge the superiority of fourth generation US fighters such as the F-15 Eagle, the Su-27 was first flown on May 20, 1977. This one seat Mach-2 fighter had the Soviet Union's first operational fly-by-wire system. The aircraft is very large compared to the MiG-29, its closest Soviet counterpart, but it is built with a high percentage of titanium, which helps minimize its weight. It is exceptionally agile and is perhaps most famous for its "Cobra" maneuver, which is a short, sustained level flight at a 120 degree angle of attack, often performed at air shows. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
