In 1965, the Vietnam People's Air Force 921st Sao Do Fighter Regiment operated MiG-17F fighters as part of North Vietnam's early air defense against US air operations. Based at forward airfields, the regiment flew intercept and air defense missions against US strike aircraft and reconnaissance flights. The MiG-17F, a subsonic but highly maneuverable fighter, allowed pilots to engage in dogfights and ambush tactics, relying on small numbers and surprise. Sao Do pilots coordinated with ground controlled interception and surface to air missile units to defend key areas. Their operations laid the foundation for later engagements during the Vietnam War.
Designed as an enhanced version of the MiG-15 jet fighter, the MiG-17 was first flown on January 13th, 1950. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
