The People's Liberation Army Air Force operated the Shenyang J-5, a Chinese built version of the Soviet MiG-17, during the 1950s and 1960s. Aircraft serial 91820 was part of the early PLAAF fleet used for air defense, pilot training, and ground attack missions. The J-5 featured a single engine, straight wings, and cannon armament suitable for short range interception and tactical operations. PLAAF pilots used 91820 and other J-5s to develop jet fighter tactics, transition from propeller aircraft, and establish China’s early jet air force capability. The aircraft played a key role in modernizing the PLAAF.
Designed as a Chinese produced version of the MiG-17, the J-5 was first flown on June 19th, 1956. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
