The Bulgarian Air Force operated a small number of MiG-25RBT "Foxbat-B" reconnaissance-bomber aircraft during the Cold War, primarily for high-speed, high-altitude surveillance missions. Delivered in the 1980s, these aircraft were used to monitor NATO activities in the Balkans, leveraging the MiG-25's Mach 2.8 speed and 25 km (82,000 ft) ceiling to evade interception. However, due to high operational costs and the collapse of the Eastern Bloc, Bulgaria retired its MiG-25RBTs in the early 1990s. Unlike other former Warsaw Pact nations, Bulgaria did not upgrade or retain the MiG-25, shifting focus to more versatile fighter aircraft like the MiG-29. Designed as a high-speed, high-altitude interceptor to counter the threat posed by the US XB-70 Valkyrie bomber, the MiG-25 was first flown on September 9th, 1964. The airframe was designed around a pair of massive Tumansky R-15(B) turbojet engines, capable of propelling it to a top speed of around Mach 3. The Foxbat is one of the fastest production aircraft to enter service. In addition to the interceptor variants, numerous reconnaisance variants were also produced.
