In 1974, the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds transitioned to the T-38 Talon for their aerobatic performances, marking a new era in the team's history. The change from the larger F-4 Phantom II to the lightweight, supersonic T-38 allowed for more precise maneuvers and lower operating costs. The T-38's sleek profile and agility made it ideal for the Thunderbirds' tight formations and complex routines. In 1976, to celebrate the United States Bicentennial, the team's vertical stabilizers were adorned with the U.S. Bicentennial logo; a stylized star formed by interlocking red, white, and blue rings. The T-38 served the team until 1982, when it was replaced by the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

Northrop T-38C Talon

Designed as a supersonic jet trainer to replace the T-33, the T-38 was based on the F-5 Freedom Fighter airframe and was first flown on March 10th, 1959. The pressurized tandem-seat cockpit offers excellent visibility for both student and instructor and provides a comfortable training environment. Being both lightweight and nimble, the T-38 is used extensively to prepare military pilots for high performance jet aircraft and has earned the nickname "White Rocket". The T-38 was famously flown by the USAF Thunderbirds air demonstration squadron during the 1970s and proved popular with NASA who use it as an astronaut trainer and chase-plane.
