RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornets are based at RAAF Base Amberley and assigned to 1 and 6 Squadrons. The RAAF acquired 24 F/A-18F aircraft while waiting for the F-35A Lightning II to become available. The RAAF Super Hornet maiden flight was on July 21, 2009 with the first five aircraft arriving in Australia on March 26, 2010. These aircraft were considered operational ready in December 2012. Operation Okra was Australia's contribution to the air war against ISIS/ISIL. F/A-18F A44-212 BuNo. 167968 was delivered to 1 Squadron on July 6, 2010. Designed as a replacement for the A-4 Skyhawk and the A-7 Corsair II and as a complement to the F-14 Tomcat, the F/A-18 first flew on November 18, 1978. Perhaps best known as the aircraft of the US Navy's Blue Angels, this carrier-capable, supersonic, all-weather fighter has many roles, including fighter escort, fleet air defense and close air support. The F/A-18 is a versatile aircraft: it can operate from carriers or land bases and a single switch converts it from fighter to strike mode. During Operation Desert Storm, the F/A-18 proved that, on a single mission, one aircraft could serve as both fighter and a bomber. © Copyright 2003-2025 The Flying Mule, Inc.
