In 1977, the US Navy EA-6B Prowler with BuNo 159586 was assigned to Electronic Attack Squadron 138, VAQ-138, aboard USS Saratoga. VAQ-138, known as the Yellow Jackets, used the EA-6B to conduct electronic warfare, including radar jamming, communications disruption, and electronic support missions. Operating from Saratoga, the squadron provided protection for the carrier strike group against enemy radar guided threats and improved situational awareness for strike aircraft. AC606 participated in fleet exercises, training deployments, and readiness operations in the Atlantic and Mediterranean. The EA-6B remained a vital component of naval electronic warfare and strike support throughout the 1970s.
Developed from the EA-6A Electronic Intruder, the EA-6B is a carrier-based electronic warfare aircraft that was first flown on May 25th, 1968. The Prowler is a key element in any USN or USMC strike-force by disrupting and jamming enemy radio and radar signals, providing protection for attacking aircraft as they carry out their mission. The aircraft can also be equipped with anti-radiation missiles desigend to home-in on enemy radar installations and neutralize surface-to-air missile threats. After a long history with the EA-6B, the US Navy began transitioning to the F/A-18G Growler in 2009. © Copyright 2003-2026 The Flying Mule, Inc.
