The 58th Fighter Squadron (FS) at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, operates the F-35A Lightning II as part of the 33rd Fighter Wing, the U.S. Air Force's premier F-35A training unit. The squadron plays a key role in training pilots and maintainers for the fifth-generation fighter, ensuring the development of air combat capabilities for both the U.S. and allied forces. As one of the first F-35 squadrons, the 58th FS has been instrumental in refining tactics, techniques, and procedures for the jet. Eglin's location provides access to extensive airspace for advanced stealth, sensor fusion, and multi-role combat training. Designed to meet the US Military's requirement for a multi-role Joint Strike Fighter, the F-35 was first flown on December 15, 2006. This single-seat fighter is one of the most advanced aircraft of our time, said to be four times more effective at air-to-air combat and eight times more effective at air-to-ground combat than any other existing aircraft. It uses a low-maintenance stealth technology, and some versions have an innovative Lift System, which gives the F-35 vertical take-off and landing capabilities.
