In the 1960s, the 199th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron (FIS) of the Hawaii Air National Guard operated the Convair F-102 Delta Dagger, a supersonic interceptor aircraft. This squadron was tasked with air defense missions during the Cold War, focusing on protecting U.S. airspace in the Pacific, particularly around Hawaii. The F-102, known for its delta wing and ability to reach Mach 1, was equipped with radar-guided missiles designed to intercept Soviet bombers. The 199th FIS played a crucial role in maintaining readiness during this tense period, often conducting exercises and patrols to ensure regional security.

Convair F-102A Delta Dagger

The F-102 was first flown on October 24, 1953. This aircraft was the USAF's first delta-wing fighter, and was also the USAF's first operational supersonic interceptor. Its primary mission was to intercept Soviet bombers, though it was also used as a bomber escort and ground attack aircraft during the Vietnam War. F-102s served with the USAF until the mid to late 1960s, when many of them were transferred to the US Air National Guard. By 1973, many F-102s were being used as target drones for testing the Patriot missile system, and the type was officially retired from service in 1976.

Hobby Master's 1:72 scale F-102 Delta Dagger is a quality model with many fine features, skillfully designed and manufactured with modern techniques. The hinged canopy opens to reveal a pad-printed instrument panel and radar screen. The speed brake can be configured in the deployed position, and the landing gear and gear doors are constructed as subassemblies for quick and easy ground configuration. The solid metal wing is masterfully recreated with downturned leading edges, raised wingtips, razor thin wing fences and removable fuel tanks. The three segmented weapons bays are constructed as a one-piece subassembly, and the six Falcon missiles feature finely detailed trapeze mounts.
